Developer Fatshark has released a sizeable update for Warhammer: Vermintide 2 which brings the game up to version 1.5. Not only that, but the update also introduces two intriguing new features. The first is a new weekly quests system and the second is the ability to collect achievement-based paintings. Both features aim to give Vermintide 2 more replay value for casual and hardcore players alike.
Vermintide 2 Weekly Quests System
Speaking with PC Gamer, Fatshark CEO Martin Wahlund discussed both of the new features at length. With the weekly quests, Fatshark wants to keep players on their toes by incorporating some truly bonkers-sounding mutators. For example, the first weekly quest causes special enemies to split into two lower-tier enemies when killed.
According to Wahlund, though, that’s just the start of what Fatshark is dreaming up:
“We have built a lot of different things, and some of them are just crazy. We could potentially do things like drop a lot of Sack Rats in the start of the farm level, so you can’t see them, just hear them running around, and you try and catch ten in one minute. A lot of them are probably going to be [set across] full levels, because that’s what people expect to play, but we could be more crazy if we wanted, which is nice.”
For the time being, completing a weekly quest’s goal awards standard loot. However, Wahlund says the eventual goal is to implement unique quest-specific cosmetic items for players to earn.
Cosmetic Achievement Paintings
Speaking of cosmetics, Wahlund also touched on the 1.5 update’s new paintings feature. By collecting painting scraps and completing certain in-game achievements, players unlock unique paintings. These paintings can then be displayed in the player’s keep, visible to other online players who matchmake with them.
Since Fatshark can pull art assets from the entire Warhammer universe, dedicated Warhammer fans might recognize some of the paintings. If, for example, a player completes all weekly quests for the Shadow over Bogenhafen DLC, they unlock a unique painting. The painting shows the artwork from the original 1987 Shadow over Bogenhafen pen-and-paper roleplaying source book.
