After a recent teaser on social media, Crytek have officially revealed that they will be releasing ‘Crysis Remastered‘ sometime in the summer of 2020. The title, which will seemingly focus solely on the game’s single-player campaign, will be coming to all major platforms, including the Nintendo Switch.
What Exactly is Crysis Remastered?
At present, Crysis Remastered doesn’t have a formal release date. Given the current uncertainties surrounding COVID-19, it’s unlikely that Crytek will commit to a firm release date until much closer to the time. However, the studio has now said that they are aiming for a “summer” launch for the upcoming first-person shooter. This launch will be on the PC, Xbox One, PS4, and the Switch.
Crysis Remastered is, as the name implies, a remaster of the original Crysis game. First released by Crytek in 2007, Crysis grew into a franchise of four titles. Crysis Warhead expanded the original game in 2008, while Crysis 2 released to positive reviews in 2011. The final instalment in the franchise was Crysis 3, which released in February 2013. Although it received mostly positive reviews, Crysis 3 was a commercial failure for EA. After the launch of a Crysis Trilogy bundle in 2014, the Crysis franchise went into dormancy.
Crysis Remastered is reportedly being co-developed by Saber Interactive, and will include; “high-quality textures and improved art assets, an HD texture pack, temporal anti-aliasing, SSDO, SVOGI, state-of-the-art depth fields, new light settings, motion blur, and parallax occlusion mappin”. Given the franchise’s reputation as a trilogy, launching Crysis Remastered certainly sets a precedent; Crysis 2 and 3 could now get their own remasters in the not-so-distant future. Indeed, it’s possible that Crytek could remaster the Warhead expansion too. Whatever their plans may be, sales of the new remaster are likely to be the biggest determining factor. If gamers flock to the re-release, the odds of getting remasters of the other titles certainly improve.
