Developers have always tried to make video games more and more realistic as technology advances and progresses generation after console generation, especially in shooters. You see your character getting shot at by hundreds of bullets, grenades, and rocket launchers, only to barely be scratched and then quickly healed without any type of medicine or help – it’s pretty unbelievable, but remember, it is a video game. One very popular and handsome video game character by the name of Nathan Drake has seemed to take thousands and thousands of bullets over the years, but according to one animator who worked on Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, it seems that Drake actually doesn’t get hit by bullets, until his “luck runs out.”
That’s a mega-swing! Sidenote I learned on joining the team: Drake doesn’t ever take bullet damage. The red UI that shows ‘hits’ is to represent his ‘luck’ running out. Eventually enemies will get a clear shot and kill him if he takes enough near-misses. https://t.co/byzVKYXVe7

Jonathan Cooper states that when the screen gets red, it doesn’t mean that Drake is taking bullet damage, but instead, means that his luck is running out and the first bullet that manages to hit him will be the one to end him. This makes some sense when it comes to him surviving being shot at by multiple people, but these guards must have some of the worst aim in history – how did they get hired? We’ve seen other games handle “health” in a similar fashion; the screen will get darker or show blood on the screen as a way to indicate that you are about to face defeat, but now we know that while Nathan Drake can do a lot of incredible things, being a bullet sponge isn’t one of them.
What do you guys think about this whole “luck” nonsense, do you think it’s a well-developed feature or do you think Naughty Dog is just making this whole thing up to make the Uncharted series seem more realistic and super though out? Let us know in the comments section below.
