The Call Of Duty rumor mill continues to turn vigorously, and the latest sure is a humdinger for all you Ninty fans out there. Gaming Intel, as corroborated by a “trusted source,” has reported that Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 will be hitting Nintendo’s diminutive hybrid console, but in a very different way than how you’d envision it.
The rumor claims that Activision’s upcoming FPS will release as a Battle Royale-only mode on the Nintendo Switch, unlike the Xbox One, PS4 and PC version. This rumor lines up with recent reports that Black Ops 4 will launch as a multiplayer-centric experience, without a traditional single-player campaign, and that a Battle Royale mode may feature, too.
Interestingly, the rumor also pinpoints the development studios working on the Nintendo Switch version: Beenox, who are known for porting Black Ops 3 to the PS3 and Xbox 360, as well as developing a handful of Spider-Man titles. And Raven Software, the developer behind FPS games like Singularity and 2009’s Wolfenstein, who also function as one of Activision’s support studios, assisting the development of many of the modern Call Of Duty titles.
If this rumor rings true, it’ll be a bittersweet victory for the big N’s miniature console. For one, it’ll be a big disappointment for Nintendo devotees that Call Of Duty’s fan-favourite multiplayer and zombies modes have opted to give the Switch a wide berth. Though on the other hand, it’s exciting to see modern gaming’s biggest zeitgeist – the Battle Royale mode – make an appearance on the Switch, a console that’s not exactly best-known for its robust online multiplayer offerings. Will such a bold and risky move pay off for Activision? Will the poultry offering of only one singular mode be enough to satiate Nintendo fans at launch?
One thing’s for sure, we’ll learn a ton of more details from Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4’s reveal event on May 17th. As always, we’ll let you know as more intel drops.
