A few days ago, Piranha Plant released in Super Smash Bros Ultimate in the latest update. However, the new character suffered a very unfortunate reception as a glitch caused the save file of the game to be corrupted. This Piranha Plant glitch could cost hundreds of hours of progress to the unfortunate players who came across it.
It was also pretty easy to trigger this glitch; All the player had to do was to play All-Star Smash with the Piranha Plant character. Sadly, not so many people knew of the reason behind this incident. However, a recent report made by reddit users (And confirmed through our own experiments) has shed some light on the matter.
A lot of players from the Smash Bros subreddit investigated the Piranha Plant glitch. However, people became shocked when they learned that Nintendo failed to replicate it. “We are aware that some users are posting about possible issues with the latest Super Smash Bros Ultimate update.” Said Nintendo in a statement for Newsweek. “After extensive testing, Nintendo has not been able to confirm that there is an issue, although we will continue to investigate and monitor the situation.”
Piranha Plant’s Glitch Could Be Caused by Defective SD Card Problems
One of the users investigated this issue. This brought attention to the Samsung 256GB 100MB/s (U3) MicroSDXC EVO. After the name was revealed, plenty of users with the same card started reporting the same issue happening. As such, it was clear that the Piranha Plant glitch had its roots on defective SD Cards.
GameXplain stated that the glitch could originate from counterfeit SD Cards. However, rynoweiss says this issue could happen with original cards: “That theory is wrong. I’m having issues with my card, and mine was verified as authentic using Samsung’s Memory Card Authentication Utility. Really frustrated they rushed to put a video out on speculation, which will just spread more misinformation.”
Here over at VGR we tried to replicate the Piranha Plant glitch with an ADATA 128GB Class 10 SDXC Card. However, the results of the test were negative and the save data for Smash Bros Ultimate wasn’t affected. As such, the issue seems to happen with Samsung SD Card owners and owners of counterfeit SD Cards.
