Nintendo Switch Cloud Saves Won’t Work for Every Game

With it being September, that means we’ll be getting Nintendo’s new online service. Simply titled Nintendo Switch Online, the service is set to launch during the second half of this month. One of the highlighted features is cloud saves, a feature that apparently won’t work for every game.

Ars Technica reports that not every game will support the cloud saving feature. It all started when a Ressetera user noticed that Nintendo’s webpage for the Splatoon 2 Starter Pack mentioned “this game does not support Save Data Cloud backup”. Other games that supposedly won’t support the feature include:

  • Pokemon Let’s Go: Pikachu
  • Pokemon Let’s Go: Eevee
  • Dark Souls Remastered
  • Dead Cells
  • FIFA 19
  • NBA 2K19
  • NBA Playgrounds

It’s possible that more games than those that won’t support the feature and the games listed above might support it later on.

Ars Technica updated their article with a response from Nintendo that elaborates on why certain games won’t support cloud saves. “In certain games, this feature would make it possible to, for example, regain items that had been treaded to other players, or revert to a higher multiplayer ranking that had been lost.” As for Splatoon 2, a first-party Nintendo title, they said it’s “to ensure that Save Data Cloud backups cannot be used to unfairly affect online multiplayer rankings”.

Nintendo Switch Online is set to launch in the second half of this month. It’ll cost $20 for a year, $7.99 for three months, and $3.99 for one month. Additionally, a family membership will be offered for $34.99 for a year.

Nintendo was supposed to have a Nintendo Direct this past Thursday, but they delayed it due to an earthquake in Hokkaido, Japan. It’s unclear as to when the Nintendo Direct will air, but that news is bound to come out soon. For more news on Nintendo and all things gaming, keep it locked to VGR.
