For over 125 years, Nintendo has been releasing everything from playing cards to video games. In Nintendo’s recent financial report, Nintendo has sold 727.65 million units. This number starts with the NES and goes up to the Switch.
With home consoles, the top three are the Wii (101.63), NES (61.91), and the SNES (49.10). The lowest selling console is the Wii U at 13.56 million. Additionally, the Switch has sold 19.67 million units so far. All in all, 300.54 million home consoles have been sold.
As for handheld systems, the top three are the DS (154.02), Game Boy (118.69), and the 3DS (72.89). The lowest selling is the Game Boy Advance at 81.51 million, but that’s still impressive. Overall, 427.11 million handheld systems have been sold.
Having only been out for over a year, the Nintendo Switch is close to selling 20 million units. With games such as Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate coming this holiday, Nintendo will easily sell more Switches. Following the Wii U’s low sales numbers, this is a massive win for Nintendo. To put things in perspective, a tweet from GoNintendo suggests that the Switch is selling as well as the PS4 during its first year on the market.
Here's yet another look at how well the Switch is doing. After approx. 16 months, PS4 had sold 20.2 million units worldwide. As for Switch, the system has sold 19.67 million units in approx. 15 months. The PS4 did this with 2 holiday seasons, while Switch has gone through 1. pic.twitter.com/mdzhopzqYY

Nintendo started in Kyoto, Japan in 1889 as a small family run company. They primarily made hanafuda cards (Japanese playing cards) and they were extremely popular. By the 1980s, they went into video games and the rest is history. It’ll be interesting to see where Nintendo goes from here with the Switch and 3DS. Nintendo has made a massive comeback and it doesn’t look like things are slowing down.
What do you think of these sales numbers? What would you like Nintendo’s next console to be? Let us know in the comments section below? We’d love to hear from you.
