The NFL regular season may be over, but there are still plenty of games to play on Madden 19! With that, EA’s development team dropped a brand new Madden 19 January title update. This one addresses and adjusts a number of game issues including a Madden 19 playbook exploit, pass coverage, special teams, and Ultimate Team. Here’s a look at some of the changes that are now in effect with the game.
Madden 19 January Title Update adjusts playbook exploit, other issues
On Wednesday (Jan. 23), EA’s Madden Twitter let gamers know of the latest title update. It mostly addresses a number of gameplay issues but should be noticeable in certain circumstances. One aspect they have resolved is a Madden 19 playbook exploit that was in the game. Basically, a team’s players would get into “unrealistic alignments” after audibles were called. The dev team notes that some gamers used it an exploit, but they won’t any longer.
Gamers will see a few special teams adjustments in the game. One of those has adjusted Madden 19 kicking in terms of kickoff trajectory. The adjustment is to address kickoffs that were difficult for a returner to catch or recover in a realistic amount of time. They also took away the possibility for spamming the controller button to work when it comes to blocking kicks when the defense is mistimed to be too early. The dev team removed this from the Competitive and Simulation Game styles.

Pass coverage received a number of updates to how that works, per Madden’s notes at the forum.
- Added new logic for Cover 4 Quarters to better handle vertical routes from Trips formations when the #3 receiver (closest receiver to line of scrimmage) is in a detached alignment
- Added coverage logic for the Deep Half Safety in Cover 6 to prevent him from matching vertical routes being ran by inside receivers
- Adjusted coverage logic for Seam Flat defenders in Cover 3 Match so that they properly match wheel routes that are run by a receiver aligned in a slot position
Madden 19 January Title Update: Other Changes
As with previous Madden 19 updates, there was a bit of tuning in this one to adjust how players act or react in the game. One of the newest is an adjustment to quarterbacks. The adjustment is for when QBs drop back “wildly” and then try to throw across their body from way behind the line of scrimmage. The update has increased the penalties that hit the QB’s Passing Accuracy and Throw Power in those situations.
In addition, an adjustment comes for tight ends in certain situations. There was an issue with TEs on specific HB Toss plays. That issue came only when the TE was set up in the wing or fullback position. However, the issue had the TE going after defenders near the backside of the formation. Keep an eye out for this one in the game.
The video below shows off an audible formation glitch involving a fullback and tight end in the game.
Another minor update comes for the Madden Ultimate Team menu screens. They changed “Huddle” to “Competitive” and it will now show off Madden Championship Series content. That includes streaming schedules, Club Championship uniforms, coaches, and more.
