The console market doesn’t look like it has room for any more consoles. However, some companies dare to think differently. One of them is Slightly Mad Studios, a company that has recently announced that they are working on a new and powerful console. The console’s name is The Mad Box.
The Announcement of the Mad Box
Earlier this morning, Ian Bell, the CEO of Slightly Mad Studios made a series of announcements on Twitter for a gaming console. It all started with a tweet declaring that “The Mad Box is coming”. On later statements – which were shared by the official Slightly Mad Studios account – the CEO talked about the Mad Box being the most powerful console ever built.
According to Ian, the Mad Box will bring 4K Graphics, VR and 120 FPS. Not only that but Slightly Mad will also provide a free engine for developers. You can take a look at the tweets below:
What is the Mad Box? It's the most powerful console ever built… It's literally 'Mad'… You want 4k, you want VR at 60FPS? You want a full engine for free to develop your games on it? You have it.

It's 'right' when your console can run at 120 FPS. We're not playing around here. This is beyond next gen. For too long have subtle iterations been accepted. Time to raise the bar, substantially. 🙂

Slightly Mad’s Maddening Console
The announcement was both strange and unexpected. As such, Variety interviewed Bell in order to gain more information on the Mad Box console. Bell said that the console will ship in “around three years time” and that “it will be a console as is the Xbox or PlayStation.”
“It will support most major VR headsets and those upcoming and the specs will be equivalent to a ‘very fast PC 2 years from now’,” Bell wrote in an email. “We’re in early talks with manufacturers of components so we can’t say much more right now other than we have the designs specked out in detail.”
A lot of people might be wondering why would there be a new console in the market. According to Bell, the industry requires competition in order to continue growing. “We think the industry is a little too much of a monopoly or a micro oligopoly,” Bell explained. “We think competition is healthy and we have the required hardware contacts to be able to bring something epic to fruition based on our designs.”
The gaming market has continued to evolve. Many people wonder whether or not the Mad Box console is the real deal or not. Ian Bell has promised that there will be further details regarding the console and its design in the coming weeks. He also mentioned that a price tag of the console would be “competitive with upcoming console prices.”
Real Competitor or Empty Promise?
The Mad Box console is going to be produced by Slightly Mad Studios. The company is responsible for producing games like Project Cars, Need For Speed Shift, and Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends. Further developments about the future of the console will be reported on as soon as they are available.
