Borderlands 3 has been available for just over one week, and while that may not seem like much time, it means that fans are already talking about the possibilities of Borderlands 3 DLC. While the game is certain to get several major DLC releases for its Season Pass, there is one thing it won’t be getting; DLC Vault Hunters. The game’s Creative Director recently stated that, unlike previous entries in the series, the roster of Borderlands 3 Vault Hunters won’t expand post-launch.
Why There Won’t be Any Borderlands 3 DLC Vault Hunters
Yesterday, Borderlands 3 Creative Director Paul Sage made an appearance on The Borderlands Show; a monthly show created by Gearbox and hosted by Greg Miller and Fran Mirabella. During a Q&A session, Sage stated that while Borderlands will get some big DLC, it won’t include DLC Vault Hunters. This is somewhat surprising, as DLC Vault Hunters have been something of a staple for the series. Indeed, DLC characters like Krieg and Gaige from Borderlands 2 are referenced in ECHO logs found in Borderlands 3.
According to Sage, Borderlands players tend to stick with one character once they start playing. For fans who pick up the game close to launch, which is the overall majority, that means they pick one of the original Vault Hunters and don’t tend to switch out to new options later. In all likelihood, Gearbox has access to data for the amount that previous DLC Vault Hunters were actually used. It sounds as though they feel that their post-launch content efforts are better directed elsewhere.
While this may be disappointing to some, it’s likely good news for Borderlands fans in general. After all, it means that Gearbox is more likely to focus on new story content and DLC releases. Indeed, the first of these will be a free event called Bloody Harvest, coming in October. Besides the current roster of Vault Hunters in Borderlands 3 is relatively substantial. It should provide those players who want to change with plenty of options for alternate play-throughs.
