In case you were wondering, yes, Fortnite is still making piles and piles of money. In fact, according to mobile app data analysis company Sensor Tower, it’s made over $100 million on just iOS alone, via in-app purchases. The next time someone tells you it’s just a video game, there’s no way it’s that popular, or something silly like that, show them this data. It’s absolutely ridiculous, and a testament to the power of Fortnite.
The free-to-play game has generated this number of earnings solely through the power of in-app purchases, so folks are willingly spending this money on costumes, emotes, outfits, and other stuff that doesn’t really matter in the long term. These are items that don’t help you win, but help you to look a little cooler when out there on the battlefield. They’re also gobbling up Battle Passes to participate in challenges to earn cool rewards, but it’s mostly a bunch of cosmetic purchases, and that’s crazy.
Fortnite beat out all other mobile titles in its genre except for the heavy hitter Clash Royale, which does allow you to pay to win, and it’s a whole other beast. In the end, Fortnite still beat out even Clash Royale in April, May, and June, however. The game has only been out on iOS since April, following its release on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC as well as Mac back in September 2017. It just came to Nintendo Switch this month as of E3 2018, but who knows how much more money it’s on track to make? At this point it’s probably best to just sit back and watch the fireworks.
Have you been playing Fortnite on mobile devices, or do you tend to stick more to platforms like PC and consoles? However you play, you’ve gotta hand it to Epic Games: they know how to keep folks engaged.
