Fódlan and all of its kingdoms are quite different in many ways. The Leicester Alliance operates free of a monarchy, and the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus thrives through tradition and chivalry. It is the Adrestian Empire, however, that is perhaps most reminiscent of ages past.
A Long Standing Empire
Formed after the Divine Seiros bested the tyrant Nemesis in the War of Heroes, the Adrestian Empire served as a shining beacon of humanity’s triumph. In close corroboration with the newly formed Church of Seiros, Adrestia grew to great strength quite quickly. Although an age of peace did indeed rest upon the empire for some time, that peace did not last forever.
Two separate kingdoms broke off to form their own coalitions. First the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus, then the Leicester Alliance. Following the swift secession, war once again enveloped Fódlan. Blood was shed over power and territories for years until the Church of Seiros was able to broker treaties between the nations and once again usher in an era of peace.
The Empress To Be
It is within these peaceful times that Fire Emblem: Three Houses takes place, and thus the Adrestian Empire is settled as one of three powerful kingdoms in Fódlan. Representing Adrestia as head of the Black Eagles at the Officer’s Academy is none other than Edelgard von Hresvelgr. The next in line for the empress’ seat, this heir to the empire is not one to be trifled with.
Edelgard is a warrior who finds comfort in control both on and off the battlefield. She regards her standing and royal bloodline highly, though does not appear to be haughty about it. Instead, she does the Adrestian Empire proud and maintains a cool head and steady hand whenever possible. Perhaps most interesting of all aspects about Edelgard is her view on the Crests.
Held by each major kingdom, and by other royal houses within some kingdoms, are powerful relics called Crests. The source of immeasurable power, these crests do not actually aid humanity but are rather the base for Fódlan’s undoing. At least, this is exactly what Edelgard would have to say on the matter. She regards the Crests as dangerous in a sense, most likely aware of the corruption such power often brings. Though other royal families seem to relish wielding these Crests, Edelgard sees a different side of them.
The Talented Black Eagles
What makes the Black Eagles particularly unique is their affinity for magic. Where the knights of the Blue Lions wield swords and lances, and the Golden Deer prefer bows, Black Eagles find their strengths in the arcane. Their house also primarily consists of students of royal heritage, with only one who is a commoner. These mark important distinctions for those who may still be on the fence as to which house to choose.
Overall the Adrestian Empire is quite a force in the realm of Fódlan. At one thousand years old they the oldest kingdom on the continent. This long fortitude in the face of several great struggles proves that Adrestia was an empire built to last.
