If you’ve been keeping up with all the frustrations surrounding the Nintendo Switch version of Fortnite and how anyone who previously played on PlayStation 4 is essentially locked out, we’ve got a bit of insight into the situation. It doesn’t come across as surprising, mind you, but hearing about the situation from someone else close to what’s going on is intriguing nevetheless.
As it turns out, the former president of Sony Online Entertainment, who’s presently at Daybreak Games, has offered his opinion on the matter. John Smedly took to Twitter to chat about the reasoning behind the decision Sony made to lock out others on different consoles, and the idea behind the restrictions? None other than money, of course. Try to pretend you’re shocked, at least.
Smedley stated on Twitter the following:
“When I was at Sony, the stated reason internally for this was money. They didn’t like someone buying something on an Xbox and it being used on a PlayStation. Simple as that. Dumb reason, but there it is.”
It’s not exactly difficult to believe, especially when it comes to the rivalries that used to exist between companies like Sega and Nintendo, and all the other age-old competitions that we’ve seen. But when it comes down to things like this, they have to know that it’s hurting all gamers in the end, regardless of the reasoning.
Right now, it’s still impossible to link your Epic Games account to your Nintendo Switch version of Fortnite if you previously used it on PlayStation 4, and that’s a huge problem. Will it ever be solved? We’re certainly not optimistic about it.
