As part of today’s big PS5 game reveal event, Rockstar officially announced that GTA V will be coming to next-gen consoles in 2021. However, this won’t merely be a port to a new platform; rather, the next-gen release will be an “expanded and enhanced” version of the game with “new features and content.”
GTA V Coming to Next-Gen Consoles Next Year
While the PS5 announcement today focused on GTA V coming to that particular console, Rockstar has since confirmed that the game will also be coming to the Xbox Series X. The new, next-gen version of GTA V will take advantage of the more powerful consoles by featuring; “a range of technical improvements, visual upgrades and performance enhancements […] making the game more beautiful and more responsive than ever.”
In fact, the next-gen launch will also feature a major shift in the way that Rockstar delivers GTA. While GTA Online will be transitioning to the new consoles, and will be getting new updates unique to the next-gen consoles and PC, GTA Online specifically will actually be free on the PS5 at launch. Essentially, sometime in 2021, Rockstar plans to release a standalone version of GTA Online, separate from GTA V. This version of GTA Online will be free exclusively on the PS5 for its first three months.
This isn’t the only PlayStation-specific bonus which Rockstar announced today either. From now until the launch of GTA Online on PS5, every GTA Online player on PS4 who uses PlayStation Plus will get a bonus GTA$1,000,000 every single month. This payment will be sent to players within 72 hours of their first log-in each month. Given that six months remain in 2020, that means a minimum bonus of GTA$6,000,000, and potentially much more than that. For now, GTA fans will have to wait for more information from Rockstar about the next-gen release.
