Just three months since Activision first announced the Call of Duty League, the massive global esports tournament is on the verge of launching. This Friday, on the 24th of January, the Call of Duty League launch weekend will begin with the Home Series of Minnesota Røkkr, taking place in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In addition to featuring all 12 of the competing pro teams, the event will also feature the first Challengers Tournament.
The Call of Duty League Launch Weekend
The Home Series of the Minnesota Røkkr team will be the first Home Series event of the Call of Duty League, taking place from the 24th to the 26th of January. Each of the twelve pro teams competing in the League will be hosting their own Home Series event throughout the year. As such, this first event is taking place in the host team’s home city of Minnesota, at the Minneapolis Armory.
Of course, the three-day event will feature the members of those twelve teams competing live against one another in-person. There will also be meet-and-greets, various fan activities, and also the first of the League’s live Challenger Tournaments. This tournament will be open to attendees who made the Challenger Points Cutoff earlier this week. (Although competitors will need to bring their own PS4 controller, micro USB cable, 3.5mm headset, and earbuds.)
The official rules for the Challenger’s Tournament can be found here. In the Tournament, all of the series until the top 16 will be best-of-3 matches. Once the field is narrowed down to the top 16 competitors, matches will shift to best-of-5. There are significant prizes up for grabs in the Challenger’s Tournament, with $80,000 for 1st place. 2nd place carries the reward of $40,000, while 3rd place is $25,000. There are monetary rewards for all of the top 16 placements, in fact, with $5,000 as the lowest prize for the 12th – 16th spots.
