Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition Free-to-Play All Weekend

As of right this moment, the Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition is completely free-to-play on both Steam and Xbox One. This limited-time promotion is set to run over the course of the weekend, before coming to an end early next week. During the event, the entire game is available for free, including all of its DLC add-ons.

When Borderlands: GOTY Edition is Free-to-Play

Launched one year ago, the Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition is an HD remaster of the first Borderlands game. From today onward, this title is free-to-play for all, although the event is limited to Xbox One and Steam. “You’re welcome to make mayhem as Brick the Berserker, Lilith the Siren, Mordecai the Hunter, and Roland the Soldier in Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition,” writes Gearbox; “for as many hours as you like between now and the end of this free play event.”

Borderlands Game of the Year Edition Free-to-Play for Limited Time

In addition to its full main campaign and multiplayer options, the Borderlands: GOTY Edition includes four major DLC add-ons, all of which are also available for free; The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot, The Secret Armoury of General Knoxx, and Claptrap’s New Robot Revolution. This actually isn’t the first time Gearbox has offered gamers a chance to play this game for free; the studio once held a similar free-to-play weekend event around 9 months ago.

This free play event will be ending at slightly different times depending on which platform you’re playing on. If you’re on Steam, then the event will end on the 23rd of April at 9:59 AM PDT / 12:59 PM EDT / 5:59 PM BST. If, however, you’re playing on Xbox One, then it will be ending a little earlier. Specifically, the event will end on the platform on the 22nd of April at 11:59 PM PDT. (Or early on the morning of the 23rd at 2:59 AM EDT / 7:59 AM BST.) Gearbox isn’t offering any accompanying sales discount on the Game of the Year Edition. However, all of your progress while playing for free will save, should you subsequently choose to buy the game. As such, you’ll be able to pick up right where you left off.
