Could Google be in the running currently to put together its own gaming platform? Sources speaking to Kotaku certainly seem to think so. Google is apparently hard at work on making this dreamlike thing turn into a reality. Unfortunately, there aren’t many specifics floating around, even from those who spoke about the potential platform to Kotaku. It’s still very much in its early stages, but it sounds like it could end up being a total game-changer.
According to Kotaku, it’s some sort of streaming platform, some sort of hardware, and an attempt to court game developers to come over to the Google umbrella, much like the company has done with the Google Play Store and its Android ecosystem.
The streaming platform is code-named Yeti, and it looks like Google, while taking meetings at E3 2018 this year, even seeks to bring over gaming developers to the Yeti service as well as buy out developers in their entirety. When pressed for comment, Google did not respond.
The streaming service sounds like it could be a colossally important pillar for Google’s role in the video game industry, however. as it would offload any work that it takes to render graphics to remote servers, removing the need for users to have PCs at the local level play demanding games. Previous streaming platforms that attempted this, like OnLive, ended up failing because of the issues that surrounded them like lag, buffering, and degraded visual quality.
Currently, there aren’t many further details surrounding the supposed plans from the giant, but if this all comes to fruition, we could expect a pretty insane attempt by Google to enter the market. Hopefully, if it really is looking to make some sort of big difference in the gaming sphere, it doesn’t just abandon the project halfway like Google Glass. It would be awesome to play upcoming games like Fallout 76 in a simple browser tab. Imagine Destiny 2 without having to power the game with a graphics card! The future sounds amazing.
