After the frustrating situation that arose with Sony regarding the Nintendo Switch version of Fortnite, many were about ready to give up on the company. The fact that they couldn’t enjoy the Nintendo Switch version of Fortnite if they had ever used their Epic Games to log into a PlayStation 4 version of the game was ridiculous to many people, and for good reason. Sony ended up commenting
Eurogamer sat down with president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America and chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios, Shawn Layden. The question was what PlayStation is planning for the next step for its cross-play feature, and his response was quite positive, at least as positive as you can get when you’re dancing around an issue like the Fortnite problem.
“We’re hearing it. We’re looking at a lot of the possibilities. You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I’m confident we’ll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business.”
Previously a former Sony CEO spoke on the matter, saying the decisions Sony had made about cross-play all came down to money and not wanting to see others on rival consoles playing games on theirs, but we’ve got to take that all with a grain of salt, of course.
Hopefully, the comments Layden made to Eurogamer aren’t just a bunch of fluff. It would be nice, even, to see Sony reversing its position on the matter and letting folks with PlayStation 4 Fortnite accounts play on Switch rather than having to start over from scratch. But at this juncture, it certainly doesn’t seem like that’s going to be the case. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel, though, and we’ve just got to keep pushing.
