As of the past several days, gamers are getting their first look at the PGA Tour 2K21 Career Mode, showcasing what’s to come for MyPlayer. In addition, nearly eight minutes of gameplay footage was uploaded online for fans to digest featuring one of the major courses in the game. Here’s what we’ve seen so far regarding the upcoming golf simulation game.
PGA Tour 2K21 Career Mode Trailer arrives
One of the popular and engaging aspects of many sports simulation games is being able to make your own playable athlete. That’s provided plenty of fun and excitement in games such as the NBA 2K series and MLB The Show. Gamers can customize the look, style, and personality of their star player. From there, they progress in terms of ratings, skills, rankings and fame.
That looks to be the case with the new PGA Tour 2K21 Career mode. Based on the trailer, a customized player named Mac has advanced all the way to the biggest showdown of his career. It’s the 18th hole of the Tour Championship and he’s up against cover star Justin Thomas. A win also means winning the FedEx Cup title.
From there, the trailer rewinds to show the path the player took to get to that moment.
Just like the popular NBA 2K video game, you’ll have a MyPlayer in PGA 2K21. Along the way, you can change up their appearance, use different brands of gear and clubs, and improve their skills. Gamers can choose either a male or female player to customize.
The trailer shows off many of the visuals from different courses. The MyPlayer’s Q school performance is also mentioned as improving. Various PGA tournaments or events are also on display including the Korn Ferry Tour, Genesis Invitational, and FedEx Playoffs.
We hear commentary from the game’s official commentary team, as well as a nickname for the MyPlayer’s fanbase. It’s the Mack Attack cheering him on as he goes.
There’s mention of having to beat the best along the way which most likely refers to the full PGA roster of golfers we recently saw. In addition, it’s likely that this will involve micro-transactions to make improvements to one’s player. So get ready to spend, or grind. More details are available at the PGA Tour 2K site.
First look at PGA gameplay footage
In addition to the look at the PGA Tour 2K21 Career Mode, IGN shared over seven minutes of gameplay footage. The new 4K footage was part of their Summer of Gaming event and featured comments from Josh and Shawn at HB Studios. In the video, we get to check out four holes of golf from the TPC Scottsdale course in Arizona.
Once again, it features the MyPlayer named Mac or Mack who appeared in the Career Mode trailer. However, it gives more of a look at the animination during actual gameplay, rather than a mix of it with cinematic graphics.
The game allows for deeper visualization of shots using graphs on the course and directional meters to aim shots with better accuracy. So far, commenters have been a bit disappointed with a few aspects such as the lack of a caddy and celebration on a hole in one, or the transitions between shots.
That said, the visuals look beautiful with the 15 licensed courses. The MyPlayer feature could keep many gamers entertained, despite the likely micro-transaction system. As they say, “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” and it may take a while to build the sort of golf game some fans really want.
More details are likely to roll out in the coming weeks with the game officially arriving for PS4 and Xbox One on August 21.
