The launch of Borderlands 3 is now less than three weeks’ away, and it seems that Gearbox’s nonstop marketing campaign is paying off. Not only are gamers excited about the upcoming launch, but Borderlands 3 may be one of the most hotly anticipated releases this year. Last week, Gamescom attendees voted for their “Most Wanted Game”. The result; Borderlands 3.
Borderlands 3’s Accolades at Gamescom 2019
Of course, Gearbox celebrated the announcement that Borderlands 3 was Gamescom’s Most Wanted Game on social media. However, they won’t be resting on their laurels for the next three weeks. Indeed, the studio will be making another event appearance very shortly at PAX West. After that, fans can no doubt expect even more pre-release information and maybe a few more trailers. Ever since the game’s announcement earlier this year, Gearbox has been aggressively marketing the title, mostly through trailer releases but also with free VIP codes on social media.
Most Wanted Game wasn’t the only accolade Borderlands 3 won at Gamescom. The title also won the event’s ‘Best Multiplayer Game’ award. (Most Wanted Game is the only Gamescom Award which is voted on by attendees; the Gamescom Committee chooses the rest.) Last year, the Most Wanted Game award went to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, while in 2017, the award went to Super Mario Odyssey. Both titles went on to enormous success; a fate almost guaranteed for the new entry in the Borderlands franchise.
Although it has been years since the release of the last Borderlands game, even counting Tales From the Borderlands, fans evidently have plenty of nostalgia for the genre-defining looter shooter. However, while it may be harking back to its glory days, the game is also attempting to change with the times. Its gunplay, for example, will be much more modern, with mechanics like aiming-down-sights. The game’s humour will also be less insensitive, according to Gearbox, although it will still be edgy.
