Currently, Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is a strictly co-op vs. AI affair in which players face down endless Skaven hordes. However, an upcoming update will allow players to *become* the Skaven hordes courtesy of a new 4v4 competitive versus mode.
Warhammer: Vermintide 2 Versus Mode
Developer Fatshark unveiled Vermintide 2’s upcoming versus mode during the E3 2019 PC Gaming Show. In an interview with PC Gamer, Fatshark CEO Martin Wahlund explained how each versus match will work.
Each match will consist of two rounds so that both teams can play as the standard heroes and the Skaven. The heroes team will see how far into a standard story mission they can make it before being wiped out. The Skaven team will focus on ensuring said wipe-out comes as quickly as possible. Whichever team makes it further into the mission while playing the heroes wins the entire match.
This unique setup should allow for some clever strategizing based on a team’s individual strengths. Even if a team isn’t very good at direct PvP, they can still win by displaying superior teamwork and coordination. Of course, if a team can successfully ambush and eliminate the enemy hero team early on, so much the better.
Vermintide 2’s versus mode is still in active development, but a number of different Skaven specialists are already playable. As you can see in the below trailer, the Skaven Globadier, Gunner, Pack Master, and Gutter Runner are all playable. Fatshark also confirmed that special Rotblood units will be playable as well despite their absence in the trailer. The studio is also taking steps to ensure proper team balance during each match and to work in progression mechanics.
