Following backlash for years, Nintendo is dropping their Youtube Creators Program. Just in time for Smash Bros. Ultimate, the program will end this December.
For the Creators
“We are ending the Nintendo Creators Program (NCP) to make it easier for content creators to make and monetize videos that contain Nintendo game content. We will no longer ask creators to submit their videos to the NCP, and creators can continue showing their passion for Nintendo by following Nintendo guidelines.”
The guidelines mentioned allows content creators the ability to monetize videos that contain gameplay or screenshots from Nintendo developed games. Additionally, footage used has to be from something officially released by Nintendo. Lastly, the creator has to either be a part of the YouTube Partner Program or the Twitch Affiliate Program.
Unlike most publishers, Nintendo required 30-40% of revenue from videos that featured Nintendo developed games. Content creators could sign their entire channel up to get 30% taken or certain videos for 40%. This move wasn’t well-liked by content creators which meant some channels didn’t feature Nintendo games. It was only a matter of time until Nintendo did something about it.
With titles such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate coming soon, more people can stream the game as long as they follow Nintendo’s guidelines. It’ll be the first game from Nintendo to benefit from this change. Additionally, it’ll offer more people a chance to start Nintendo themed YouTube channels without the risk of giving up revenue. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launches on December 7th.
